Navy HN Shane Edmaiston became a corpsman to avoid combat, but still got the best of it when he was blown up by an old Russian grenade thrown at his patrol by an Iraqi teenager. While on a foot patrol with 2nd Battalion 7th Marines to move vehicles away from voting sites for an election taking place the following day, Edmaiston and the group were attacked by two teenagers in a group of kids who had been following them throughout the day. Though they got “lucky” and the grenades were from the 80s, Edmaiston and the last Marine in formation were knocked unconscious from the blast. When he came to, Edmaiston ran to the other casualty, got him to cover and patched him up before treating himself then continuing to search the area while medevac was on its way.
