In 4 years in the Marine Corps from 2005-09, and 2 Deployments to Iraq as an Artilleryman, I never once had a single write up, no bad review, no page 11, and no NJPs. How did I have such sharp skates you ask? I didn't drink, ever. I hate the taste of beer and alcohol, I even don't like the taste of ice cream, I just have a funny palate and can't stand to drink, so I never once got in trouble until... I was getting out.
My retention specialist said "you wanna re enlist? I'll let you try out for recon!"
I said "Are you kidding me? look at me, I'm way too outta shape to even try that nonsense, no thanks, I want out!"
She replied, "yeah you do look out of shape, I'm going to give you a page 11 for being overweight."
I said "Excuse me?! I tape out just fine and I have a 2nd class PFT, I get out in 1 month! You can't give me a page 11 for LOOKING overweight can you? You have to tape me first right?"
She said, "Its ok, with this page 11, the Marine Corps won't be able to recall you ever while your on Inactive Ready Reserve because you would require a 'weight waiver' and they aren't handing those out right now."
I said "Well fuck it, if it keeps me from getting recalled give it to me."
Little did I know, that page 11 gave me a bad reenlistment code of RE3P, which meant NO SERVICE ANYWHERE would recruit me unless I made my weight, the same weight I came out of bootcamp with!, and NO SERVICE ANYWHERE was going to give me a weight waiver in 2009 when I got out during the worst recession in 75 years, and during the military drawdown.
I later learned this was a draw down tactic designed by the Obama Administration to cut down on the troop levels, simply put...to make them unqualified for the job, and force the recruitment offices to deny anyone requiring a waiver of any kind from 2009-2015 to get into the military. So I tried for years to get into the Army, Air Force, Navy, and Marines, but they wouldn't take me back unless I could get back to the weight required, which was about 60 lbs less than what I was when I got out. I'm talking bootcamp weight.
I thought that was dumb, well played Green Weenie, well played.
